Summer weather update

7/31/2023

New Hampshire is in the midst of summer, and it's been a mixture of typical New England weather:
  • June was rainy all month long,
  • July started off cool and clammy (ick!)
  • July finished hot and humid (double ick!).
Mother Nature is finally balancing out, and we're heading into August with comfortable temps in the 70s and lower humidity (ahhhhhh!).   This is the ideal scenario we dream about all year long.

Weather is very important when it comes to the animals we care for.  The alpacas respond to it similar to how we do, but they can't escape into air conditioning.

We've been running the fans in the barn to move air and help the alpacas feel more comfortable.  On a hot day, it's not unusual to find them camped out in front of the fans all day long.

But now that milder weather is here, we're seeing more sunbathing.

Speaking of Indie, she is doing wonderful.  While very clingy to her mom the first few weeks, she is now five weeks old and is becoming more independent and bravely ventures farther from her mom but always runs back to check-in or when Stormy calls her.

Indie loves to run and play and most recently has been teasing her auntie Summer by provoking her to nip at her while Indie jumps away with a "can't catch me!" attitude.

This little girl has spunk!

We have a surprise for you!

Stormy had her cria today.

Born 9 days early.-- completely unexpected.
Both Stormy and her baby are doing great.  They are in a private stall this evening, adjacent to the rest of the herd so they have privacy while they continue to bond and the rest of the herd is just on the other side of a fence panel.

The cria weighed in at 15 lbs. 8 oz and completed all the necessary tasks it needs to on day one:
  • stood up
  • found the milk bar
  • did its first poop

Oh! And remember the list I shared in our cria kit ready to attend to the baby's needs?
Syringes & needles
Oral Gel 80ml
Offset Graduated Bottle 22 oz

Bulb Syringe
Cria coats
Colostrum Replacement & Colostrum Supplement

digital thermometer
Electrolytes
Feeding Tube & Syringe
All Purpose Lube
Navel Clamp

Exam Gloves
OB Shoulder Sleeves
Pritchard Nipple
Utility Scissors
Stethoscope
Triple Antibiotic Ointment
Vet Wrap

Iodine
Scale

As hoped, we only needed the items in blue

And before I forget, baby has a name too.

We have a list of names and were working on selecting ones, but once the cria arrived, a name came to mind instantly: Independence, with "Indie" as a nickname.

Thank you for riding this journey with us and have a happy Independence Day!!
